You receive a notification when someone reads your message on Instagram, WhatsApp, or Facebook. Some people despise this feature, but it’s highly convenient when you need to find out whether someone is ignoring you. What about Discord?
Discord does not show read receipts like many popular messengers and social media platforms. Can you tell if your message has been read without knowing when it was sent? I’d like to find out more about this.
I’m not sure why Discord doesn’t offer read receipts when just about every other platform does. It may be about fighting social anxiety – preventing that feeling of seeing the read icon under your message but not receiving a reply. You’ve accidentally opened a message you weren’t going to reply to.
Some people speculate that Discord developers simply weren’t asked about it frequently enough to bother them. Every new feature requires significant investments, and if users won’t appreciate it, it’s a waste of time and money. Despite this, Discord’s community forum and social media indicate that many users are interested in this feature.
A user tagged Discord’s official account on Twitter and asked, “Would you be interested in creating an icon that indicates whether a message has been read?” Discord replied, “Read receipts are a pretty popular suggestion! We hope the developers will not forget about this request and implement it soon. Please upvote it on our feedback page.

You must know that we’ve already searched for a read receipt plugin – and couldn’t find one. Although Discord supports a wide array of plugins, some users report that adding read receipts is impossible.
It is possible to find out if a person is online and active on Discord, however. The online status of a user is indicated by a green dot next to their avatar by default. When you see a yellow moon icon (“Idle”), the user is online but busy at the moment. Also, the red no-entry icon (“Do Not Disturb”) indicates that a user does not wish to be bothered right now. If you message someone but their status is “Idle” or “Do Not Disturb,” they probably haven’t read your message.
Users can, however, disable their online status. If you keep your chat open, you will be able to see if a user is typing you a reply.

Value the Privacy
It can be upsetting to realize a feature you’ve been looking for doesn’t exist. Discord’s official Twitter page confirms the developers are considering the idea. It may only be a matter of time before it is implemented. Meanwhile, let’s focus on the pros of not having the read receipt feature: less anxiety and greater privacy.
